If downsizing is necessary, be sure to do it the right way

Downsizing is one of the most unpleasant events in the history of a firm, but unfortunately it is a fact of life that many experience when the economy hits the skids. I hate to say it, but we may be entering a period over the next few quarters where staff cutbacks are going to be more common and necessary as the US economy seems to be sliding into recession or near-recession.

While layoffs inevitably have some negative repercussions on staff morale, there are steps that firms can take to mitigate their impact. Morale can be affected by the fact that downsizing is necessary at all, how it is done, and what the firm does afterwards to present a plan for recovery.
